The soil around your home might not be the optimal place to plant your seeds. So a lot of urban gardeners around the world use raised beds and hoop houses to grow their crops. This allows you to place the soil of your choosing into the beds, and allow proper water drainage from the drilled holes at the bottom of the bed. A hoop house in an excellent tool to help you grow vegetables in the winter by using plastic sheets to keep fruits & Vegetable to insulate the internal temperature. If you plan on building your own Raised Bed, I strongly recommend to build a hoop house to protect your crops from cold weather during the winter months.

This configuration is similar to what I use to grow my organic produce and the results are far greater than if I attempted to plant seeds in the soil around my house, the yield would be much lower due to the contaminantes contained in our local soil from gas emissions.
